As the title implies, the book Learning to Love: A Journey into the Realm of Love by author Kevin Monroe talks about love—a subject that has been exhausted by countless writers since time immemorial. At first glance, it may appear to be just another book; however, to dismiss it summarily is to miss out on life-changing insights. Learning to Love: A Journey into the Realm of Love is a reading experience that must be savored—the kind of material that will invite readers to pause and do some serious introspection.
The book is built on the premise that, since the beginning of time, when God willed for life and the universe to exist, love was there. In fact, love was the force behind creation. Monroe acknowledges what scientists bring to the table for us to understand the physical world. Still, like many scientists who are now receptive to matters outside their areas of expertise, the author believes that “nothing on this earth is more precious than love... Love is the Allness; the Allness is love.”
From this point, some questions beg to be asked: How can something so grand, such as love, sometimes end in betrayal, pain, and abuse? How do we find love where there is hatred, violence, greed, bigotry, and economic despair?
Monroe addresses these questions and says that there is one special type of love that will answer these questions—agape love. Agape love is the solution to man’s problems. It is a divine, unconditional, and sacrificial love that elevates man to his highest level of righteousness. This righteousness is easy to duplicate if we care enough to get started. One man’s act of kindness can reverberate across great distances and affect everyone in its path.
But are we capable of agape love? Yes, we are. It is exemplified every time someone sacrifices himself for the sake of others. It is exemplified whenever we give wholeheartedly more than we take.
Indeed, it is true that “what the world needs now is love, sweet love.”
