Most of us feel that to be able to answer God's calling to start a ministry, we need a special talent or an impressive degree in theology. Doing something "God-sized" can be very daunting to think about. What do we need? Would we get the support of those around us? Where do we start?
Many are called, but only a few are chosen. And, even fewer know where to begin. Elizabeth A. O’Neill, director of Saving Grace Outreach in New York and author of How to Do Ministry in Your Own Backyard, know what it is like to start a ministry. There are certain challenges, doubts, and even fears that those who answer God's call know very well. In her book, How to Do Ministry in Your Own Backyard, she addresses these obstacles and provides a very comprehensive, real-world guide on how to do ministry no matter where you are in the world.
How to Do Ministry in Your Own Backyard is a step by step guide. It talks about the importance of a steady stream of prayer both from yourself and your prayer group, continually immersing yourself in God's word, and having an unwavering answer to the question, "Are you in?". O'Neill also shares her knowledge in many aspects of ministry that many would gloss over or may not even be aware of. In this book, she discusses the physical aspects of ministry, such as getting the organization's taxes in order with the IRS, finding the right location, assembling food pantries, getting help, and many more.
Leading and serving in a ministry may seem exhausting and involve a lot of work. It is because that is true. There is no way around it. Many leaders in the Bible were not already leaders when they answered God's calling. What they have in common is the willingness to answer. They were able to achieve or contribute to "God-sized" things because of one thing they have in common...God. If you are ready to let God's vision unfold in your life, this book is an excellent place to start.
"This is a step by step guide to doing ministry. It gives you the confidence and design God has for his hands and feet in this world. Perfect for beginners so you do not have to reinvent the wheel."
